A Shopify product-image A/B test compares alternate media experiences for assigned shoppers and measures whether the change improves confident purchasing rather than only image interaction.
Match the image to the question
Test whether context, scale, detail, material, use, or the primary angle is missing from the current experience. The variant should answer a specific shopper question supported by evidence.
Keep product facts accurate
Images must represent the same product, included items, color, size, and available options. Avoid a variant that creates demand by implying accessories or features the shopper will not receive.
Protect speed and layout
Use comparable dimensions, responsive sources, compression, zoom behavior, and alternative text. A visually stronger image can lose if it delays the largest contentful paint or shifts the page.
Measure beyond gallery use
Image clicks and swipes help explain behavior, but the decision should reflect add-to-cart quality, completed orders, revenue, and returns. Review mobile separately when the crop or gallery behavior differs.
