An add-to-cart button A/B test compares a controlled call-to-action treatment and measures whether it improves qualified cart additions and completed purchases.

Define the interaction problem

Use evidence that shoppers overlook the action, misunderstand the next step, or lose it on long mobile pages. Color alone is rarely a useful hypothesis unless contrast or hierarchy is genuinely weak.

Preserve product validation

The button must respect required variants, selling plans, quantities, personalization, inventory, and error messages. A variant that bypasses a selection can inflate clicks while creating failed or incorrect carts.

Test sticky behavior carefully

Check keyboard focus, screen readers, safe areas, app widgets, consent controls, and cart drawers. Sticky controls should not cover content or duplicate actions in a confusing way.

Use orders as the decision

Add-to-cart rate is a diagnostic metric because the action occurs near the tested element. Confirm that the change also supports checkout completion, revenue, and order quality before rollout.
