A free-shipping threshold A/B test compares threshold offers or messages and measures whether higher order value offsets shipping subsidy and any change in conversion.
Model the economics first
Estimate current cart distribution, shipping cost, margin, and the number of orders already above the threshold. Choose a test range that could improve contribution rather than only raising average order value.
Keep the message current
Update progress after quantity changes, discounts, item removal, currency changes, and market selection. The cart should never promise free shipping when the final checkout rules will not provide it.
Check edge cases
Test subscriptions, excluded products, oversized items, local delivery, pickup, tax treatment, returns, and discount combinations. Verify that the control and variant use the intended threshold throughout the path.
Read the net effect
Review conversion, revenue per visitor, average order value, shipping subsidy, margin, and product mix. A higher threshold can improve order value while losing enough orders to reduce total value.
